NEWPORT NEWS, VA

World-class attractions, over 30 public parks, lots of annual fairs, festivals and special events, as well as great places to golf, dine, shop and spend the night are all part of your vacation in Newport News.

Best of all, we have a variety of activities for every family member, especially the young and young at heart. Ready for a little outdoor soft adventure? At over 8,000 acres, Newport News Park is the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi River, with plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, floral gardens, disc golf, fishing, archery, nature programs, paddleboats and two 18-hole golf courses. Or you might try to catch a Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab or one of many varieties of saltwater fish found in the mighty five-mile-wide James River.

History comes alive at our battle re-enactments, where you and your family can talk to a soldier from the past, or at The Mariners' Museum, where you can sit in an aircraft carrier ready room or touch a piece of decking from the USS Monitor. Or, you just might hear a few plantation tales or learn about one's heritage when you visit one of our restored historic homes, Endview Plantation, Lee Hall Mansion and The Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center. Our nation's military heritage is told through the thousands of artifacts at the Virginia War Museum, including a section of the Berlin Wall, one of General Colin Powell's Desert Storm uniforms and President's Harry Truman's World War I helmet.

The Virginia Living Museum has many special programs and activities, including a touch tank with starfish, hermit crabs and other marine creatures. Their newly expanded outdoor nature trail takes you across Deer Park Lake and up into the trees to view native Virginia animals in natural habitats. Plus, who could resist the jeeps, trucks, and tanks - even a "flying saucer" at the fascinating U.S. Army Transportation Museum; or the goats, sheep, llama and other cuddly animals at the S.P.C.A. Petting Zoo?
